Late 19th to early 20th century Burmese betel-box, or “kun it”, spice box in rich laquered wood with incised decoration through to crimson red, deep green and ochre coloured layers underneath. The interior is a bright cinnabar red with seven compartments that lift out. The trays had light dust when photographed, this has now been carefully removed and they are solid red. Highly decorative and in very good condition, displays beautifully, closed or open. The centre rondlelle depicts the sacred bird Garuda, and the surrounding cartouches depict animals of good fortune, namely lion, monkey, leopard, griffon, elephant, mouse, naga water spirit and an antelope. The rest of the design shows a strong European influence, but retains the spirit and beauty of the typical Burmese incised design. Exactly 8 inches across, and 1 6/8 inches deep. Downsizing the family collection. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian/Oriental Antiques\South-East Asian”. The seller is “sourire” and is located in this country: GB.
